Beim Lamer

A house with a byname

In Bodenmais, houses are known by their house names. Ours is called beim Lamer – and there is more history in that than you might think at first glance.

Oldest photograph of the house with family at the fence
The oldest photograph – family and house, still from the mountain-cottage days.
Historic photo of the house with “Zimmer” sign and balcony
Later with balcony and “Zimmer” sign – guesthouse tradition made visible.

The name does not come from the village of Lam, even though that story is often told. Behind it are the Laubners: carpenter Wolf Laubner already built here in 1675. Over time, dialect turned “Laubner” into “Lamer” – the u dropped, bn became m, and the house name was set.

The present building dates from 1871 to 1874. Before that, furnace worker Josef Stern sold the old mountain cottage to the mining authority. They demolished it and used the plot as a store – Stern built anew next door, and brother Georg received a right of residence. A typical Forest deal.

In 1887 the Weikl era on the property begins: Theres Stern and Franz Weikl take over. Since then it has been beim Lamer – and Weikl. The first Weikl arrived in 1695 from Innenried near Zwiesel; because so many Weikls live here, every house needs its byname.

And guests? Already earlier: a “Zimmer” (rooms) sign hung on the house. Until 1966, wood, litter and grazing rights from 1522 still applied here – Josef Weikl redeemed them for a good 22,000 marks. End of an era, beginning of guests who are welcome to arrive.

Freely based on the house deeds, reconstructed by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Haller (2014).
